How dangerous is detroit?

so about a month after moving to the suburbs, i went to a lions game in downtown and after the game i decided to drive around the city and while the downtown area was nice, namly greektown when i got out of the downtown area u could imediately see the run down areas tainted wth graffiti and me and my friends decided then that we wouldnt drive any further after when we exited from a subway we LITERALLY heard like 5 or 6 loud gun shots that sounded prety ******* near where we wer e so we like drove away fast i dont wana visit that area again. so is detroit really just all guns and gangsters and drugs?
