Would he say this if he felt I was "out of his league"?

Okayy... I have a HUGE crush on a guy who is geeky, very into politics, NOT athletic, and very nervous around ppl. He wears collared shirts and has gles. He is not fat, but my friends and grandmother think he is "pudgy" (it does look like he has moobs). On the other hand, I wear tight black hard tail pants, victoria's secret PINK tank top/cami's, drive a lexus, wear PUMA sneakers, and am not a geek in any way, shape, or form. I am not fat and have 32D bra size (and yes, i do wear shirts when i volunteer with my crush). We are friends on facebook, and he sees that i have over 500 friends, guys have commented on how "y" i am in my photos, and i have several pictures of me dancing at parties (NOT drinking or smoking). He has only like 50 Facebook friends (and most of them are family members & his mother and 40 y/o aunt). Nonetheless, the two of us have A LOT in common (its creepy), and we loovee cars and share many intrests. From his cousin (who i am friends with, and knoe for sure i am NOT going to date) I heard that my crush (the geeky guy) REALLY liked me, and was dying to ask me out, but his NERVES were getting in the way. His cousin said that my crush was verry QUIRKY/ODD and SHY. A week ago, I asked him to prom, and he said he had another "commitment." A few days after asking the guy to prom, his cousin told me that my crush said "Defintley likes me as a friend, but i am not his type!" I knoe my crush told his cousin he was not going to prom with me, but why would he say that i was not his "type"? I have witnessed that my crush is somewhat claustraphobic, and gets paniky around crowds. I saw my crush on Sunday, and he was friendly as anything. When he saw me, his face just lit up, and his eye contact was that special eye contact you get from your crush or w.e. I knoe i have caught him checking me out, and he does look me in the eyes for a second and look away (or smile a bit b4 looking away). When he greets me he says "heyyy... hows it goin" with a little raising of the eyebrows. I told him a month ago that i LOVE beards on guys, and the next time i saw him he had a little beard (and he STILL has it)! Prior to that, he had never grown a beard (despite that he was shaving & fully developed at 14 y/o) He let me rub the beard two weeks ago, and he savored every moment. Could he just feel intimdated by me, and feel that i am OUT OF HIS LEAGUE? I am 17 y/o (and a junior) and he is 16 y/o (and a sopre) & not the type of dude most girls dig.
