Is it safe/normal for a patient to ask a doctor for a MRI?

With the recent controversy over Michael Jackson's death about patients asking doctors for specific drugs, this question popped into my mind. After all, is there much harm over what accounts to a radioactive picture where the entire procedure is supervised by doctors?
